The Kabbalah says that the human soul has three elements:

Nefesh: The lower part or animalistic part of the soul.  It is part of the soul at birth and is linked to instincts and cravings.

Ruach: The middle soul or the spirit.  It contains virtues and distinguishing between good and evil.

Neshamah: The higher soul or super-soul.  It allows one to have awareness of the existence and presence of God.

The Kabbalah or Tree to Life also fits into the Flower of life symbol.
